Sharing a Room with Siblings

Sharing a Room with Siblings

Moving siblings into the same room can feel like a big leap! It can be exciting for some kids and overwhelming for others. The good news? With the right setup and some simple routines, it can be a positive, time and space saving set up (plus great bonding experience!) for the whole family. And with Goldminds, you have an extra tool to make bedtime calmer, cozier, and more connected.

Why Share a Room?

Families choose room sharing for all kinds of reasons such as limited space, building sibling closeness, or simply wanting kids to feel comforted by one another. Sharing a sleep space has tons of potential benefits– it can strengthen bonds and create sweet memories on top of being simpler for parents to manage. Of course, it can also mean extra giggles (and wake-ups), so be prepared for a transitional period.

When to Start?

Many parents wait until baby is at least six months old to move them out of the parents bedroom (the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends rooming-in with parents for the first 6–12 months). At this point, you may move your baby into their own room or in with a bigger sibling. Keep in mind you can try it out gradually- for example you might begin with naps together before moving into full nights. If you want your children to share a bed, wait until the yongest is 2 years old.

Setting Up the Space

  1. Keep your toddler’s sleep setup familiar! No big transitions at the same time as this transition. If they are still in a crib, you can keep them in there if space allows for 2.
  2. Talk positively about the change to create excitement. Have your toddler help pick out decor, new sheets, a special new lovey etc.
  3. Proof the room for safety: anchor ALL furniture to the walls (especially if you've got climbers!), keep cords and wires out of reach, and make sure the crib is secure.
  4. Use blackout curtains, white noise, or a room divider to cut down on distractions.
  5. 💡 Goldminds can help here too! Make both kids the stars of a bedtime adventure so the new space feels magical instead of stressful.

Bedtime Routines with Two

Bedtime may take some trial and error. Options include:

  • Divide & conquer: one parent with each child.
  • Family bedtime: everyone gathers for stories and cuddles before lights out.
  • Staggered bedtime: baby first, toddler after (or vice versa depending on napping needs!)

🎧 Goldminds sleep stories and Little Lessons are designed to end softly, helping both kids wind down together, even if one is still wide awake when you hit play.

Safety First

Always follow safe sleep guidelines for your baby: no loose bedding, toys, or bumpers or pillows in the crib. Keep shelves, cords, wires and decorations out of reach, and monitor siblings’ interactions with the sleep space with a video monitor.
